KEY WORDS
WHERE YOUNG IMAGINATIONS TAKE CENTRE STAGE.
KEY WORDS IS A UNIQUE PLAYWRITING PROGRAMME FOR YOUNG PEOPLE WITH DYSLEXIA AND OTHER CHALLENGES ASSOCIATED WITH WRITING.
Working alongside professional playwrights over a series of weekly workshops, participants develop the skills and confidence to create their own original play. The programme is designed to celebrate creativity, imagination and individual voices, providing a supportive environment where young people can explore ideas, tell stories and express themselves through writing.
What makes Key Words distinctive is its focus on achievement and celebration. Each participant receives a professionally printed copy of their completed play and sees their words brought to life on stage by professional actors, transforming ideas on the page into live performance.
Since 2012, Key Words has been delivered in partnership with leading theatres, schools and community organisations, including the Royal Court Theatre, Lyric Hammersmith and Park Theatre. Through these partnerships, the programme remains free to all participants, ensuring that financial barriers do not prevent young people from taking part.
At its heart, Key Words is about recognising and nurturing talent. The programme encourages participants to see their creativity as a strength, helping them build confidence, develop communication skills and discover the value of their own unique perspective.
As one teacher reflected:
"The students themselves had the chance to have their ideas, their way of being, their voices, confirmed and validated in the most joyous celebration of difference and neurodiversity." - Teacher
