The Key Club
THE KEY CLUB, PRODUCED AND DEVISED BY TURTLE KEY ARTS, IS AN ARTS CLUB FOR PEOPLE FROM 16 TO 30 YEARS OLD WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM CONDITIONS.
The club meets once a month on a Saturday morning at The Lyric Hammersmith, each meeting consists of a two-hour creative arts workshop presented by professional artists, followed by a social break. Recent workshops have included creative writing, singing and song-writing, film and video, visual art, script-writing for TV and Radio, drama, circus skills, photography and stop-frame animation.
The members create great art, learn new skills, work together in groups, discuss their experiences and become friends. The Key Club encourages communication and inspires confidence. It is a place where the members can relax and be themselves. It has prevented some youths from hiding in their rooms, enabled others to become independent travellers, and it has been instrumental in helping people onto further education courses.
The Key Club was originally devised and created by Turtle Key Arts in 2003 as a response to the lack of creative activities available to young people with Autistic Spectrum Disorders once they have left full time education.
Key Club is run by Turtle Key Arts with funding from John Lyon's Charity and The City Bridge Trust. Special thanks to Marina Kleinwort Trust and Henry Smith Charity.
There are currently two Key Clubs run by Turtle Key Arts, held on a Saturday morning and afternoon once a month, at Lyric Hammersmith, London.
